Excavations at Akrotiri

Akrotiri Frescoes (boxing) Akrotiri Frescoes (fish catch) June 13 - Inland excursion to the Akrotiri Minoan excavations to see the 3,500 year-old unearthed in 1967 by Professor Spyros Marinatos. It had been destroyed around the year 1500 B.C. by en eruption of the volcano of Thera. The earthquake was very destructive. It is responsible for the ruinous state of the houses that you see on the site. Once ashes from the volcano began falling, the houses were packed so well that they escaped any further damage through the centuries.

As in the case of prehistoric Pompei, two and three story buildings, city squares, shops and workshops were buried under the lava. Marvelous frescoes (as shown) were found in some of the houses and they can be seen in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens. I believe the excavations have true significant meaning to the cultural history but most of the artifacts are on display in the museum and it hard to relate what the guide is saying if all you see are dirts and rocks.
